About

Phil has over 35 years’ experience in structural and civil engineering. He began his career in a small west London consultancy where he was thrown in at the deep end of structural design with projects ranging from Beecham Pharmaceutical industrial units, animal enclosures at the then Winsor Safari Park to small domestic extensions and underpinning remedial works.

He then moved on to Shepherd Gilmour, a large national consultancy with offices throughout the UK. Here he was involved in large leisure and commercial developments including extensions to the Grand Hotel in Brighton, the design of the Grand Hotel in Southampton, various Shire Inn Hotel projects and multiplex cinema designs.

In the early 1990’s Phil spent time in Australia working for a civil structural consultancy on the design of Steel Mills, Marine Structures, Water Treatment Plants and Bridges. It was here that he became  interested in reducing the environmental impact of engineering designs.

Upon returning to the United Kingdom, he did a further short period with Shepherd Gilmour before joining Ellis and Moore as a senior engineer, rising to Associate and then Director. His workload here focused on Community and Social Housing projects working with clients including the Peabody Trust, One Housing Group, SHG, various local authorities, and contractors including Kind and Co., Wates, and Places for People. He has designed and overseen the design of developments comprising multi storey reinforced concrete frames, steel frames, loadbearing and framed timber, and loadbearing masonry. Phil has given talks for Corus on the use of steel frames in Residential Developments.

In 2021 Phil set up Philip Deane Associates (PDA) to continue his work on both large and small scale residential and community focused buildings whilst also maintaining a commercial client base and pushing for lower carbon engineering solutions. The Company’s current clients range across all sectors including a number of large and small Residential Developers, Contractors, Housing Associations, Local Authorities, Businesses, Hospitals, Schools, other Consulting Engineer Practices, Architects and Home Owners. He brings a hands-on approach to all aspects of a project and a wealth of problem-solving experience.
